چکیده

Ronald Noë teaches ethology, behavioral ecology and human evolution at the University of Strasbourg, France. He studied biology in Groningen and got his PhD in Utrecht, both in his native country, The Netherlands. He held positions at the University of Zürich, Switzerland and at the Max-Planck Institute in Seewiesen, near Munich in Germany, before moving to France in 1998. Most of his research had something to do with cooperation in primates. He founded the Taï Monkey Project, a program of research on eight species of forest monkeys in Ivory Coast, in 1989. He is probably better known, however, for his theoretical work on ‘biological market theory’. After a first paper written with fellow primatologists Jan van Hooff and Carel van Schaik, he developed more formal Biological Market models together with Peter Hammerstein, a game theorist. From 2006 till 2011 he was heavily involved in three multidisciplinary European networks, all with cooperation as their central theme. He recently spent a sabbatical year at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) at Wassenaar, The Netherlands, where he started working on a book on ‘Markets in Nature’ (to be published by Cambridge UP).

Reexamining Enactivism

In Action in Perception and “Experience without the Head,” Alva Noë argues that what is perceived emerges as one actively moves about in the environment. Moreover, the role of action is directly relevant for perceptual content, as it is enacted into existence. Noë’s goal is to develop an account of perceptual experience that supports an externalism in which perceptual experience does not need t...

Final version Spatial Perception via Tactile Sensation

If a sensory brain state plays an unusual functional role, does the phenomenology go with the role or the brain state? If the phenomenology goes with the functional role, that supports functionalism, which is the view that phenomenology just is the role. If it goes with the brain state, that supports physicalism, which is the view that phenomenology is what realizes or implements the role. I ag...

Defending Noe's Enactive Theory of Perception

Theories of perception can broadly be divided into two groups: orthodox and heterodox theories (Noë & Thompson, 2002). Orthodox theories of perception consider perception as a neurological process, i.e. as a phenomenon which can be explained solely in terms of intracranial facts. Heterodox views expand this scope, maintaining that an understanding of perception must include extracranial facts, ...
